Yes, Thursday. The game was moved up a day because of concerns about Tropical Storm/Hurricane Hanna

Yes, Paxon (a private school in Jacksonville), not Paxton (the small town on the Florida-Alabama border in Walton County). More than a few people have made that mistake.

Here’s a question: Who would be a tougher for for the Dawgs? Paxon or Paxton?

At this exact moment, Paxon would destroy Paxton in football. It takes time to build a football program.

As far as overall football potential, the Bobcats might actually have more gridiron upside than the Eagles, based on what I’ve seen from Paxton’s talented young basketball players.

Who would be a tougher foe for CHS? Paxton or Paxon? Or will Hanna be the Dawgs’ toughest foe of all?

Fay, which did less damage to this area than a typical afternoon thundershower, has to right near the top.

I’m not complaining and I know we’re lucky. The next one always could be much worse.

That said, what would say is the “worst” tropical system to move through the area, in terms of least amount of damage done?

I’m one of the guilty. I have voted in every presidential election since I turned 18, but my voting record in other elections is shaky at best.

Thing is, I couldn’t tell you why. It was never a case of being too busy, out of town or mad at the candidates. “Apathy” would be the best description.

I’m hoping to turn over a new leaf. Weather permitting, I’ll be at the polls bright and early Tuesday.

For those who are regular non-voters, do you have any good reasons for not voting? Post them here.

With that in mind, was it wrong to make prominent mention of new Laurel Hill Mayor Vizell Robbins as the first black mayor in Okaloosa County?

Yes, it’s obviously a huge step forward as far as breaking racial barriers that, whether we like to admit it or not, still exist (EDITOR’S NOTE: I’m referring to barriers that exist across the nation; not in Laurel Hill).

Is it a step back to make mention of those barriers?

I haven’t figured out an answer, but I would like to know what readers think.

I kept wondering why the name Kelci Bryant sounded familiar as I watched her represent the United States in the women’s 3-meter Olympic synchronized diving competition Sunday.

Then it hit me — I interviewed her twice when she was a diver for a high school in my coverage area at a newspaper in Indiana.

My wife also has a distant Olympic connection — also in synchronized diving, of all things. Mary Beth Dunnichay, who will compete in the 10-meter synchronized platform diving competition, is from my wife’s hometown of Elwood, a town about a third the size of Crestview.

What are Crestview’s Olympic connections?

I’m not aware of any local athletes representing the area in the Games. I did a Google search for “Crestview Florida Olympians” and got nothing useful.

However, are you related to an Olympian? Do you or did you once know one of America’s Olympians? Do you have some other unique connection to a current Olympian?

Share your Olympic connections by posting a story here.

From a relative outsider’s point of view, I assume the main reason is Ronald Reagan. If you go to electoral map history sites, the South more or less voted Democratic until Reagan came along, and since then has done almost a complete 180-degree shift.

For those who have lived here for years, how, when and why did this shift take place? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

One of the discussions during Monday’s Crestview City Council meeting touched on the location of the Crestview Christmas parade.

The discussion was nothing more than a tangent on this night but could be the subject of much more talk in the future.

Should it stay on Main Street? Should it move to Industrial Boulevard? Is there another, more suitable place, the city should consider?

A thought: If the concern is having enough space, Main Street is not the problem. My wife and I watched the parade two years ago from the part of the sidewalk farthest from the street and had not problem. Now, if we had tried to join the mob trying to cram into the front row, it would have been a squeeze. The problem is not space; the problem is too many people trying to cram into one spot when more room is available.

That said, where is the best place for the Crestview Christmas parade? Post your thoughts here.

Crestview High School will host a “Freshman Bulldog Camp” orientation program for incoming freshmen Aug. 14-15 at the school.

This is a good idea. Anything that makes the transition from middle school to high school easier is a good thing.

The most common prank seniors would play on freshmen at my school would be to tell lost ninth-graders to “take the stairs” to a certain classroom.

There were no stairs in the school.

That’s the best advice I have for CHS freshmen. If an older student tells you to take the stairs, find someone nicer to help you.

We received a variety of responses to Ann Spann’s article on the first execution in Okaloosa County, an article that appeared in the July 19 edition of the Crestview News Bulletin.

A few things that need cleared up:

• The person on the gallows is Caucasian

• The building in the photo is not the Alatex building.

For those who questioned publication of the story, I think we all had the same initial reaction. The difference is this: I read the story and thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe things used to be this way. People need to learn about our history.’ Others have told me they thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe things used to be this way. This doesn’t need to go in the paper.’

Same reaction. Just a different conclusion.

For the record, I oppose the death penalty. Not on moral grounds, but because I don’t have faith in our juries to render the correct verdict 100 percent of the time.

I think the article is appropriately informative, regardless of your take on the death penalty or public executions. To look forward, you have to know where you’ve been.

What are your thoughts? Should we do away with the death penalty altogether? Do we need to bring back public executions? Did the story belong in the paper? Post your thoughts below and vote in our online poll.
